Trinidad as a colony

Trinidad was a colony to many countries such as Spain, France and England

The Amerindians; the Arawaks constituted the labour supply of the Spaniards. This was in accordance with the Spanish policy of being instructed in the principles and the teachings of
the Roman Catholic faith. It was not a very famous colony because there was no discovery of gold. However, in 1618, with the first report of the discovery of cocoa, the warning note was sounded that Trinidad would go the way of other West Indian islands.
From the English the public school program, which was modeled after the British system, took form in the twentieth century and eventually opened up avenues for upward mobility to all elements of society. By doing so the British also imposed their language 'English' upon all the inhabitants of the island. There form of Westminster style government and court system has also lasted through the colonial period. All of these vestiges are present today.
