British mandate of Palestine

            Before Israel became a country on May 14^th 1948, it was under control by Britain from 1920-1948. This was known as the British mandate of Palestine. The British gained control of Palestine from the Ottoman Empire during World War I. A few years later the Ottoman Empire was succeeded by Turkey. The Ottoman Empire had been in control of the region for over 400 years. The British mandate declared that a national home should be created for the Jewish people. Many revolts took place in the region during the 28-year period in which Britain was in control. When Israel declared Independence from Britain in 1948 the surrounding Arab countries sent soldiers to invade Israel. In 1949 Israel signed armistices with the multiple countries and was now in control of the majority of Palestine. To this day the fighting between the Israeli and Palestinian sides still continue such as the recent war in Gaza. The Palestinian’s want the country to go back to the way it was before the British were in control and changed everything. They want the country to be under Arab control again. The Israeli government tries to come to peace agreements with the Palestinian government but attacks by Islamic militant groups make this impossible.
