When a Marxist critic is analyzing literature one thing they always look for is the idea of social class and how some characteristics of human nature transcends this. This reinforces the idea of “equality” in this type of governing. The idea of ‘essential’ social placement in society being a product of a preceding economic structure is also similar to Marx idea that social groups developing throughout history were based on economics.
When analyzing literature Marx critics also look for signs of social progression. One example of this is when Gramsci talks about the fate of an exhausted social group. Over time the ideology of that group withers away and all that is left is room for revolution. In every analysis you will find a comment on social class and the idea of equality. Approaching texts like this is useful because it enables you to analyze texts like this and can give readers the chance to see social and economical situations present in certain times and places. From a mere story they can now see the ‘truth’ of real life. Approaching texts in this fashion can take the morality and entertainment out of the story itself. Some people may enjoy just seeing a movie like Slumdog Millionaire for a fun story with some sort of hope, and instead they are now reminded of the limitations they have in society and the current economic situation. The movie reminds of of our current economic situation and is not so hopeful any longer.
