It was cold and chilly on the night of Feb 04, 2009 and unfortunately the detective squad heater was out of order. The captain of the precinct said it would remain this way until next week which left the whole precinct to be a frozen igloo. Inside the squad however was probably the chilliest of all. The broken concrete allowed a small gust of wind to seep through the cracks and nibble on detective Brenda’s neck. Detective Brenda was the only one working that day because most of her colleagues were unavailable due to either snowstorm, sick, or having an affair with someone other than their spouse. She continued on typing furiously while thinking about the other cases that she has. The detective squad was always bombarded with stupid cases, one which detective Brenda was closing out. She was working on a case that involved the crime of harassment. Supposedly the husband was harassing the wife through the use of email, by using email to harass it becomes aggravated harassment. Detective thought to herself, “Wow, typing all these 5’s I might as well become a counselor! Or a psychologist! God… d….”
Right then and there the phone rang loudly to the point where the ring echo bounces off the walls and into halls of the Detective Squad. There she picked up and said
“Detective Squad, this is Detective Brenda speaking,”
“Hey its Sgt Bo downstairs we have a confirm D.O.A., and eh… looks like a possible homicide.”
The eyebrows on the detective pointed downward when that statement slither through from the phone. Her face grew hard and grim, her tone shifted on a more serious note.
“Alright, I’ll be down in a minute”
There she grabbed her gun and strapped it on her belt. She opened the desk drawer and there she strapped a shinning gold detective badge next to her belt buckle. She then walked over to the to a radio area where she grabbed one and strapped that next to her gun. Since the office was that cold, the Detective was already suited up with pointed high heels, grey slacks, a baby blue button down with the bullet proof vest strapped on top, covered with a black pea coat.
Knowing that she was alone on this case, she let in a deep breath and exhaled slowly for what she knew the night was going to be a long night. Once she arrived down the stairs she was encountered with Sergeant Bo who was short and chubby around the neck. He was known for working night shifts and for being the calm and collected boss.
Detective Brenda said, “sup boss.”
The Sergeant replied, “go down on broadway you’ll see the sector cars there.”
“Homicide is there yet?”
“Yea, so is your cap, so yea it doesn’t look too good out there though.”
Knowing from that statement her calves tighten and her body chilled knowing that she was the only person not notified yet. There she quickly drove up in an unmarked vehicle where she stop on broadway and 92 st. She was already felt nauseas when she saw the supervisors there surrounding the crime scene. She parks and steps out, walking rushly towards the officers.
“Hey fellas, so what we got?”
Detective Kino from the homicide squad replied bitterly.
“Another dead young lady, but this one was found shot right between her brows.”
“Do we have any clues, anything from that would give us a heads up?”
Knowing that she was talking to another detective from another unit, it would be hard to get answers even from them because they too wanted the pride and glory of the case.
“Well, since you work around this area. I’ll tell you then...”
“Ok hot shot” countered “Tell me about senior detective”
“Alright, so here he has this jogger from the east side usually taking her evening stroll which involves cutting the park and getting to the west. She said she usually passes this area but for some reason she caught a foot next to the can over there. So she stopped looked behind it and bam there she goes… surprise!!!”
“Ok well was everything worked on yet? Canvasses, verticals, did you call evidence collection unit lab? Matter of fact what else did you find?!”
Frustrated she slapped her front heal onto the concrete floor, there the captain of the squad moved over and said.
“Brenda, Brenda, please it’s ok we worked on most of it all you have to do is call and investigate a bit further. We do have a couple of alibis and supposed witness and even 911 callers. Let’s not be clouded by anger but work on this together.”
Captain, or should I say captain Johnson was a senior captain from the detective unit where he would be in charge of major crime scenes that involved murder and robberies. He reminded her of her grandpa who just relaxed and displayed a huge of amount of wisdom.
She replied “alright cap, just to let you know, this is my case, and it doesn’t seem like any of those guys are willing to assist in any way.”
There he said “Don’t worry about it, it is and will be your case but here take this list. These are the list we collected, we just need you to run their names contact and collect whoever you can find and hopefully the lab will get back to you.”
Once she took the list she knew already who was the killer. She walked over to the body and there she clasped her mouth firmly, then whispered to herself “Margaret Dunn…” It was the female who filed the harassment case she was working on earlier. She felt guilty knowing that she was going to close out the case, knowing that this guy she assumes was far far away. She thought it was just some threatening email from a spouse to another but never thought it would have gone that far.
Knowing that the possible suspect, she quickly went back to her Squad. She then read the email once again looking for hidden clues that would trace on for tonight. She looked closely and there she saw it. She saw that there were strange symbols that were at every end of the emails. She thought to herself, “Maybe if she deciphers this, then it would have some sort of meaning behind it.” So she did, she found out that he was using a different font. She then quickly deciphers the font and it read “I will get away with murdering you tomorrow.” Each word was at the end of every email. After finding out the true nature of the email, she urgently sent out an alert within the 5 towns under the name of “Michael Dunn” and there she got a response from an airport.
“He’s on flight 5667 heading to Costa Rica”
“Good, don’t let him leave”
“Yes Detective Brenda”
When Detective Brenda rushly got to airport, she saw him waiting at the there. She quickly walked over to him, and saw that he was clean shaven sitting there waiting for the next flight. He then saw her and smiled menacingly, and stated
“Hi how are you.”
“Hi...Mr. Dunn I have to take you in for questioning of the death of your current wife.”
He laughs crazily and shook his head up and down
“No…. I’m not going anywhere today…. I killed her because….. Ha-ha... She’s…”
There he took out a gun and points it directly at detective Brenda. She then reacted with a quick response and shot him point blank on his abdomen. The people there screamed and ran around knowing that a gun fire had just occurred. Detective Ivy stood above the dead body and radio in “Yea I need a bus over here pronto, and tell the Captain... Case solved”
