Freud and literature

Like dreams, literature can be interpreted in many ways depending on the person/reader interpreting the subject matter. Like Freud in his interpretation of dreams, readers in literature apply different meanings to stories through symbols etc. Freud also applied the same approach to interpreting dreams. His process was made up of condensation which is the way we understand a dream on the surface, then displacement where we begin to apply meanings to the dream, and then visualization. This is where we finally put everything together and transforming thoughts into images. We use a similar process in literature, and just like in dream interpretation we often are unable to prove that our interpretation is correct. I think that this psychoanalysis applies to literature because the way we interpret literature reveals more about the reader than the actual literature itself. I believe the same applies to dreams, the way a person decides to interpret certain things in a dream reveals our problems or anxieties we have in everyday life.
