Elain Showalter and Julia Kristeva both have different thoughts on how a feminist critic can read a piece of literature. Elain Showalter says feminist criticism can be divided into two varieties. The two ways are if the text is written by a man and the other is if it is written by a woman. When the female is the author its subjects include "the psychodynamics of female creativity, linguistics and the trajectory of the individual or collective female literary career."(Showalter 147) When the male is the author one might look for images and stereotypes of women in literature. Julie Kristeva believes that the feminist role is related to Christianity. This critic will look for ideas brought about through religion. In Christianity, men have always been the leaders, the women are set behind them. In the excerpt from The Company of Wolves women are displayed as compliant. The women are described as weak and innocent, but Carter describes the little girl as a strong minded child. This shows female creativity because this goes against the thought of women as weak and innocent.
