Colonization

Almost every country or nation throughout history has been colonized by some other greater nation at some point in history. Ecuador is an example of a Southern American country which was colonized by Spain in the 1500s. It was originally an Incan nation, untill it was taken over by Spain. Although many of the indigenous people died from disease, the colonization of Ecuador by Spain was peaceful. Agriculture, art, architecture and many other aspects of Ecuadorian culture flourished during this time. They made new developments is agriculture, and contructed new monestaries and churches also. The "upper" classes were treated perfectly fine throughout the colonization, but the indian or indigenous people and mestizos were faced with forced labor, and were treated very badly. They were treated as if they were under what their social standing (if there were actual classes) was. Their bad treatment resulted in violent wars in which many people were killed. Aside from the indian people going against the ruling families, there weren't too many problems coming from the Ecuadorian people, untill they decided to revolt against Spain with Panama, Colombia and Venezuela. At that point all the countries made up "Gran Colombia". This was only for an eight year period, after which Ecuador became its own independant nation.
As we read in Heart of Darkness you can see that there are always people that are going to be treated lower and badly in a colonization. Although only the indian and mestizo people were being treated badly, the other Ecuadorians were not. They were able to flourish agriculturaly and in the arts regardless of the fact that they were being conolized by a larger nation. This shows that although a nation is being colonized by another, it doesnt necesarily mean that the people of the colonized nation will be enslaved, or treated poorly.
