The colonization of countries around the world has expanded throughout history. During our class discussion we spoke about the colonization of Africa in connection to Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and how the country and people suffered because of this. Venezuela is a country in South America that was colonized by the Europeans in the 16th century. The country was being ruled by the military and was first colonized in 1522. Through history most Central American and South American countries were colonized by Spain. After several attempts of declaring its independence Venezuela took part in the French Revolution and finally declared its independence. Colonization has many effects such as enslavement, and the abolishment of the indigenous people and their culture. Which is what was being portrayed in The Heart of Darkness, when the people of Africa were slaves and were treated poorly. The people of Venezuela were afraid that with their country being colonized, the indigenous people would cease, and their culture would slowly disappear. For many Venezuelans culture was and is very important to them and the thought of it being taken from them scared them.
