Chandler & Fish

 Fish writing is similar to Chandler since it is speaking of how a person can distinguish a piece of writing to be a poem. In “How to Recognize a Poem When You See One”, Fish writes “The commonsense answer, to which many literary critics and linguists are committed, is that the act of recognition is triggered by the observable presence of dis-tinguishing features. That is, you know a poem when you see one because its language displays the characteristics that you know to be proper to poems.” as the answer to this. Like Chandler’s writing which focus on genre and the explanation of what a genre does, is used for and what makes a piece of work fall into a genre. Both of these writings can also be connected to the statement found in Modern Literary Theory, “Though the concepts of ideology, the unconscious, the signifier, and the sex-gender distinction, are often simply assumed as givens in the contemporary theory, ...”, when speaking of the authors Marx, Engels, Freud, Saussure and Beauvoir. All three writing spoke of a person tendency to draw their own interpretation from what something that is given to them. Chandler’s writing only spoke of genres but can be applied to other situations like Fish did in his essay. Fish explain how a person’s method of identifying a genre can also be applied in every person general life. Everyone has the ability to distinguish things for what they may think it is. For a common situation such as a person who is softly waving their hand. One may interpret this as a gesture to greet them while another may think it is a way of declining something. If this gesture was made when a person see a friend it usually will imply the first interpretation of greeting someone. If this occurred between a person who was eating at a restaurant while the waiter offered the costumer more water, it could be the second interpretation of a person declining. These two interpretations are known by most who lives in this country. 
 A person who lives elsewhere does not always have the same meaning for each gesture. For someone who lives in a different country who does not others greet with this method may be confused by what the other person is doing. The gesture can also be known and have a different normal interpretation in that country such as the American way of making the hand symbol of perfect. An American usually make a circle with their index finger and thumb and leave the other three finger out. In a Spanish country this is a negative symbol that is interpreted as being opposite of the American norm and symbolizes something being bad.
 Most people general categorize the different events that happen and uses it for a different situation. A piece of writing like a person waving their hand are interpreted differently to every person. Many people however will interpret it the same because of what they remember it to mean in different situations unless they do not know of what is the normal reaction for the event occurring. In the case of genre, Chandler says that each genre has their own expectations to uphold and Fish explains that a poem also has expectations, what is associated with being a poem and. As described by Fish and Chadler, most people knows what is and should be categorized into the different categories of genre. But the idea of categorization can also be applied to people in their life situations where they know how to interpret a situation into its own category.
