1. Choose the time period and locale. My detective story would take place in Southampton on Long Island, during the winter time present day. I chose this setting because I spent 6 years of my life living in Southampton and the place itself is much different during the winter than it appears to be in the summer when its filled with the city people who come out to spend their summers vacationing and making the local people of the town's life a living hell. During the winter time everything is slow paced and since its a small town there are no street lights and not too many people are out late at night, so it can get a little scary if you find yourself in Northsea where you are deep inside what seems like a forest that there is no escaping from. I would choose the main setting to be in the village of Southampton, the beaches and the shops in town. Town is basically where everyone goes to shop, walk their dogs, and be social.

2. Develop a Detective. The detective of my story would have to be a retired head detective from the police department. Trust me, in the Hamptons, there isn't much to do but be in everyone else's business but your own. Older people are the best at doing that. They have no jobs and no family around, just a spouse if they have one, and we all know men get weary of sitting home doing nothing having to deal with their wife and all her chatter and complaining. He'd be a nosy old man around 60 who saw something strange and began to snoop around town looking for clues as to who might be the culprit. Along with dealing with his age as an issue, he'd also have to deal with his wife bickering at him to stay home and stop meddling, and the force poking fun at an old man who is imagining things.

3. Outline the Crime. The crime would be a series of murders happening all throughout town at night, with one body being found at a time. The murders would all be of young wealthy women, around the age of 20. Their bodies would be found in places all throughout the town, but that was not where the crimes were commited. The young ladies would be kidnapped, and then tortured and their bodies would be dumped in a location to be found.

4. Include Some Clues. Of course the first person to be a suspect would be an older gentlemen who would be kidnapping assaulting the women and then murdering them because of some sick obsession he had, and a failure of his to find love and romance in his own life. Unfortunately the crime would not be as simple at that seemed to be. The clues found would of course be things on the body and around the scene of where the body was found, a piece of rope, a peice of jewelry, something small that would be a tool of the killers, and they thought to be something belonging to the victim, but actually belonged to the killer.

5. Identify the MMO: The motive would be envy of course. Living in the Hamptons a young woman became envious of always trying to be included in the in scene, but was never quite one of the it girls. She was seen as a wannabe and became envious of what she never was able to achieve. The method would be kidnapping, them at anywhere she could find them alone, after following them and finding out where they would be. The opportunity would be the old lonely man who is always seen around town, of course he'd be a suspect because he was seen as a creepy pervert who checked out the young ladies and stayed out alone in town wandering the streets.

6. Identify the Alibis of the Suspects. The suspects would all have jobs and unknown affairs that were not known to the public and were hidden from their closest friends and family, so it seemed as if they were perfect to commit the crimes, but in fact were not guilty at all.

7. Provide the Climax. The climax would be when the detective finally finds the main clue, a lipstick or something personal that was clearly belonging to a female but clearly not of the victim.
