The piece of work I have chosen is the movie “The Notebook” (2004) directed by Nick Cassavetes. The genre of this film seems clear to me as being romance. Romance films, as well as romance novels, all have one thing in common; a great love story which surpasses all. This film has precisely that. “The Notebook” contains a love story that stays strong for years and withstands separation. Of course, romance films are not always sweet and loving; there is heartbreak and at times betrayal.
Noah and Allie fell in love in the south as teenagers and although they fought a great deal they did truly love each other. However, Allie was to stay there only for the summer and she left
Another important aspect of the film that makes it a clear romance is the idea that the love of Noah and Allie remained alive and strong throughout years. After many years, Allie becomes engaged to a wealthy solider. On a trip into Charleston Noah sees Allie with Lon and becomes a bit crazy. He begins to restore a house that he had promised to restore for Allie when they first met. While trying on her wedding dress, Allie comes across a picture of Noah and restored house in the newspaper and she decides to go a see him to make sure he is okay. Once they are reunited, it is clear that they are still in love. After all the years, they always remained in each others hearts and they knew they would only be happy with each other.
In the end Allie, of course, chose Noah to spend the rest of her life with. The main reason I feel this movie is a romance film is because it is a fantasy story. A great deal of people want that fantasy, fairytale love story that always brings you to the person of your dreams regardless of what it in your way. Whether you have betrayed this person or they have betrayed you, or in Allie’s case a move and disproving parents, everyone wants to have that one person that will always be there to love you and spend their life with you. Despite all the hardships and years that have gone by, those two still loved each other and even though it seemed as if they wouldn’t end up together, they did and they ended happily. Having a movie like this keeps hope alive in those hopeless romantics that wish for a story similar to Noah and Allie’s.
